EJGE Vol. 10, Bundle E [2005]Dr. Amartya Kumar Bhattacharya obtained his Mtech and PhD degrees from the Indian Institute of Technology, Kharagpur. He has been teaching at the Bengal Engineering College (Deemed University), Howrah, India, where he has been actively engaged in research, teaching and institution development activities. He has guided and is guiding a number of ME and PhD students. He has traveled extensively abroad and has visited leading institutes. He has published several research papers in national and international journals and conference proceedings, including at an International Symposium in Bremerhaven, Germany in September, 2002 where he went to present a paper. During this visit to Europe, he also visited the Institut für Hydromechanik und Wasserwirtschaft of the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology, Zurich. His core areas of research include groundwater and related issued like land subsidence on the one hand and saline water intrusion on the other.
He is a member, fellow or life member of many professional societies. He is a Fellow Member and Vice-President (East) of the Association of Consulting Civil Engineers (India) in which capacity he has been associated with the preparation of several documents related to regulation of the profession and practice of Civil Engineering. He is also a Fellow of the Indian Water Resources Society. He is also deeply involved with the activities of the American Society of Civil Engineers — India Section, of which he is a Life Member and a member of its Executive Committee. He has been jointly awarded the Hem Prabha — S.N. Gupta medal for 1995 by the Institution of Engineers (India). He is also serves as a reviewer for a number of journals. He conducts research independently as well as through sponsored projects.
